Waves of Madness – Rift World Event Guide

June 23, 2011

Well what do we have here?  Another Live Event in Rift?  Count me in!

Coming relatively quick on the heels of their first major event, this one definitely has me interested.  I’m looking forward to seeing if Trion picked up the ball they dropped in the first event.  While I liked the overall theme and goal of the initial event, it had enough go wrong to overshadow what it got right.

I’ll be doing my best to cover as much of this event and its five (!?!?!) phases as I can, but be forwarned:  I’m going on a road trip and I’ve yet to test Rift out on the laptop.  :/  ~crosses fingers~

So, make sure to check back often for updates, especially after phase changes, and feel free to leave any info I’ve missed in the Comments section and I’ll update it as often as I can!

Have fun!

~Gaar

Waves of Madness
(World Event – June/July 2011)

Abyssal legions gather their power from the black depths of the ocean, while the horrors within Hammerknell Fortress stir in anticipation of being unleashed.  As an Ascended, you must stand against these nameless horrors, or all the world shall drown.

Official Promo Page

General Information

Waves of Madness started on June 22nd.  It is set up to have five phases to progress through, with no set dates for completion of one phase or start of another.  If you don’t want to miss a phase, make sure to keep a watch for announcements of phase changes.  The phases are listed in the following order:

  1. The Black Depths
  2. Against the Storm
  3. Return of the Shade
  4. A Light in the Dark <– Current Phase
  5. A Celebration of Light

The World Event Merchant for Defiants is named Boularna and is located at (5940, 5273) in the College of Planar studies in Meridian.  Alternately, you can purchase items from the Runeguard Merchant, Nicholas Knack, located at approximately (6191, 5197) in Meridian.

The World Event Merchant for Guardians is named Brendnall and is located at (7505, 3099) in Thontic’s Row in Sanctum.  Alternately, you can purchase items from the Runeguard Merchant, Nicholas Knack, at approximately (7400, 3120) in Sanctum.

Shiny!

The currency used for this event is the Rune King’s Seal.  These tokens are earned in various ways, from quests to rifts, so make sure to participate in all aspects of the event to earn as many as possible.  Also, just like last time, these take up an inventory slot so make sure you have extra space available.

Purchaseable Items for Waves of Madness

They didn’t mess around this time it seems.  There is a veritable cornucopia of items you can purchase with the event currency ranging from pets to appearance items to a new Planar Focus!  Different items unlock during the different phases and they’re labeled as such which definitely makes it easy to plan ahead.  Kudos there, I must say.

  • Lesser Deepstone - 75 Rune King’s Seals
  • Deepstone – 125 Rune King’s Seals
  • Greater Deepstone – 250 Rune King’s Seals
  • Exalted Deepstone – 500 Rune King’s Seals
  • Lesser Barnacle Encrusted Necklace - 75 Rune King’s Seals
  • Barnacle Encrusted Necklace - 125 Rune King’s Seals
  • Greater Barnacle Encrusted Necklace - 250 Rune King’s Seals
  • Exalted Barnacle Encrusted Necklace - 500 Rune King’s Seals
  • Blue Shell Crab – 250 Rune King’s Seals
Summons a pet crab
  • Vial of Abyssal Water – 10 Rune King’s Seals
Most likely makes weapons glowy like the death version, no stat bonuses
  • Recipe: Rune of the Abyssal Apprentice – 350 Rune King’s Seals
  • Recipe: Brew of the Abyssal Apprentice – 350 Rune King’s Seals
  • Rune of the Sea Squall – 500 Rune King’s Seals
Summons a storm cloud, complete with thunder and lightning.  Very short duration though.
  • Luminescent Conch Shell – 500 Rune King’s Seals (Unlocked after Phase 1)
  • Puffy Dwarven Toque – 500 Rune King’s Seals (Unlocked after Phase 2)
Man is that ever puffy

  • Happy Seacap – 500 Rune King’s Seals (Unlocked after Phase 3)

  • Endless Vanity Armor Piece – 500 Rune King’s Seals (Unlocked after Phase 3)
Shoulders
Helm
  • Barnacle Encrusted Planar Focus - 1,000 Rune King’s Seals (Unlocked after Phase 4)
Guardian Focus
Defiant Focus
That’s a lot of stuff, although definitely mostly optional.  Which is a good thing in my opinion.  If you’re going for the Achievements, you’ll easily be able to buy the Planar Focus, Necklace and Essence which are the only things there I’d say aren’t necessarily optional.  Even then, it just depends on if you have something better already or not.  The Planar Focus is a definite must-have though simply due to the water resist bonus on it.  :p

Rift/Invasion Loot for Waves of Madness

As they did last time, they’ve added in once-in-a-lifetime loot drops to rifts and invasions.  Keep your eyes open and your fingers crossed and you may just end up with something sexy and incredibly rare!

Tricorne of the Drowned Thief

(promo pic – will add new pic once I get one)

Murdantix Mount

(promo pic – will add new pic once I get one)

This bad boy is currently dropping from Water rifts but may drop from other types in later stages of the event, most likely Death.  It will also be a very rare drop in Hammerknell even after the World Event is over.

Necrotic Banner

Reusable with a cooldown timer… from Death rifts

Mask of the Screaming Abyss

Notice this is bound to account. That means you can loot it on any of your characters and pass it off to another one.  Yay for high-level farming!  :p  (Image courtesy of Minudra on Argent Shard)

Worn Treasure Map

There are multiple different types of these allowing you to have more than one in your inventory at a time.  They’re looted off of rifts/invasions.  Both of mine were from Water rifts.  They give you the “Hidden Valuables” and “Lost Treasures” quests.  (See the quest section for more information.)

Torn Scrap

These are looted off rifts/invasions.  I got mine doing a Water invasion in Iron Pine Peak.  They give you the “Torn Scrap” quest.  (See the quest section for more information.)

Broken Weapon Fragment

This item came from a Salt Encrusted Bag which is the reward for the quests the Worn Treasure Map gives.  It gives the “Redeemed Rewards” quest.  (See the quest section for more information.)

Jornaru’s Seal

This item was loot from a Water rift.  It gives the “Storm Chaser” quest.  (See the quest section for more information.)

Waves of Madness Quests

Both unique and daily quests tend to be the norm for these types of events, so I wouldn’t expect anything less this time around.  They’ve already stated there will be lots of dailies and they’ll change during the phases with some sticking around through multiple phases.  Apparently, there may be up to eight dailies you can pick up at one time during parts of this event.  With that many quests available, hopefully it won’t take too much effort to purchase the items at the top of your “DO WANT!!1!!” list.

To start the event quest line, you’ll need to head back to your capital city and find the Runeguard quest-givers.

Note:  As a heads-up, some of the names of the quests tend to vary based on what level you are, but the goals are the same and they come from the same people, regardless of faction.  So just match the quest to the goal and away you go!  I’d list all the names, but I don’t have toons in all level ranges currently.  :/

The Runeguard was formed to protect all Telarans from the dangers of runebinding.

In Sanctum, Tekro Barkuul can be found at approximately (7397, 3096) just to the south of Tavril Plaza.

In Meridian, Tekro can be found at approximately (6200, 5203) on the northeast side of The Training Yard.

Shell Shock/War is Shell/Shell Comes to Telara  (Daily)- Guardian/Defiant

This daily sends you out to gather some eggshells.  Someone at Trion really likes eggshells apparently…

I’ve received disturbing reports that the Dark Reaver population has boomed.

If we don’t kill their young, we will have an army of flesh-eaters crawling up our beaches.  However, their willingness to breed could be a benefit to us.

Dark Reaver Eggshells have amazing restorative properties.  By collecting them, you’ll help improve our stock of healing supplies.

  • Collect Dark Reaver Eggshells from Dark Reaver Eggs

Check your map of your level-specific zone to find the quest-circle.  It should be in a shoreline area in the water.  Head there and dive in to find the eggs.  Once you click on them, you’ll gather up one and also unleash 1-3 mobs to kill before you can move on to gather the next.  These mobs are zone-appropriate in level, so make sure you’re big enough to handle them or else bring some high-level friends along to walk you through it.

Once you have all you need, return to Tekro Barkuul for your reward.

You’ve quelled the Dark Reaver uprising and managed to return with shells that have amazing restorative properties.  The Runeguard thanks you for your service, <your name here>.

Reward:  25 Rune King’s Seals, XP

Blessing Wardstones (Unique) – Guardian

This one is easy to complete and earns you a new Ascended Power for your trouble, but is only available if you haven’t already purchased the ability.  Seeing as how it only rewards XP, it’s not much of a loss if you’ve already got it.

As an Ascended, you can help the Ward resist destruction by blessing wardstones.

First, however, you must be trained how to do this.

Go and speak with Quartermaster Melke in the Sanctum of the Vigil.  Learn the Bless the Wardstone ability from him.

  • Purchase the permanent ability to bless wardstones from Quartermaster Melke in Sanctum

This guy should look familiar.

You’ll find the good Quartermaster inside on the main level and to the left.  His “talk” bubble shows up on your map even when you’re not close, which makes it easy to find if you somehow get lost.  Talk to him and purchase the abillity for 50 Planarite, then return to Tekro Barkuul to complete your quest.

Excellent.  You have increased your potential as an Ascended.

Reward: XP

Augmenting Wardstones (Unique) – Defiant

This is basically the Defiant version of ‘Blessing  Wardstones’.

Go and speak with Garad Nallam in the College of Planar Studies.  Learn the Augment Wardstone ability from him.

  • Purchase the permanent ability to augment wardstones from Garad Nallam in Meridian

This guy should look familiar.

You’ll find Garad inside the College at approximately (5944, 5278).

Reward: XP

Bracing the Ward (Daily) – Guardian/Defiant

This quest is offered by Tekro Barkuul and opens up once you’ve completed ‘Blessing Wardstones’.  (If you already have the Ascended Power, then you skip right to this.)

If the Prophet of Woe is correct, the Ward is under unusual strain from Akylios’ forces.  We’ll need to strengthen the wardstones.

Fortunately, you have the power to do just that!

Find a wardstone that’s near your level of power, and use your Bless/Augment Wardstone ability to brace the wardstone.  If necessary, take back an enemy foothold to restore a wardstone first.

  • Use your Ascended Power: Bless/Augment Wardstone on a wardstone within five levels of your level

This one is fairly straight-forward.  Just find a wardstone in a zone that matches your level, click on it and look at the icon to make sure the level is within five of your own, then use the new ability.  Once done, return to Tekro Barkuul to collect your reward.

Thank you!  The wardstones are holding up all the better.

With your continued help, we can keep the Ward from collapsing under the strain.

Reward:  25 Rune King’s Seals

Swift Action (Daily) – Guardian/Defiant

This quest is offered by Arnalt Prell who can be found chilling with Scotty Malm at approximately (7406, 3120) in Sanctum and approximately (6203, 5197) in Meridian.

We must take action, or all the world is at risk.

The Abyssal are obtaining reinforcements from the Plane of Water by way of several planar tears hidden beneath the seas and lakes of Telara.

Use this Warped Coral Focus.  It will allow you to lure the creature on the other side of the tear into Telara.

These creatures are responsible for maintaining the tears.  By slaying them, you’ll help to slow their buildup of forces.

  • Use the Warped Coral Focus to lure Tidelord Overseers out of underwater tears in <level appropriate zone (usually)>, and slay them

This one can be completed fairly quickly as well.  Simply find the marked water area in the zone and use the item via your quest tracker while inside the bright, shiny tears.  There are similar tears outside the marked area, but you can’t use the item there so make sure you’re inside the quest circle.  Once you’ve finished off three of the scaly bastards, head back to Arnalt Prell for your reward.

Your actions have definitely set back the Abyssal’s plans!  The Runeguard thanks you for your service, <your name here>.

Rewards:  25 Rune King’s Seals, XP

Something Fishy (Daily) – Guardian/Defiant

This quest is obtained from Oblo Crustypot who can be found at approximately (7399, 3136) in Sanctum and at approximately (6194, 5179) in Meridian.

I may not be the best cook, but I am a resourceful one.

Can you smell it, <your name here>?  Smells like TREACHERY!  I know there must be Abyssal slithering about, but they can change their appearance and make themselves look like regular folk.  But douse them with a little sea water, and their true scales come out.

  • Use Oblo Crustypot’s Bucket to reveal Abyssal Infiltrators in Sanctum/Meridian
Just like last time, they’ve given us a quest that you can complete for event currency without leaving the security of Sanctum/Meridian.  Just run around to the appropriate NPCs and click the icon in your quest tracker to douse those around you and see where their true loyalty lies.

They need to work on their blending-in skills…

Head back to Oblo once you’re done for your reward.

I knew I smelled their rotten fins.  If you have any of their entrails stuck to you, I could use them for tonight’s stew.

Reward:  25 Rune King’s Seals

A Storm Brewing (Unique) – Defiant/Guardian

This quest appears to be level-gated as it wasn’t available on my mid-20s Guardian but it was on my level 50 Defiant.  Makes sense since it takes you into Runic Descent.  It’s offered by Dulan Lighthammer who can be found at approximately (7400, 3133) in Sanctum and at approximately (6192, 5180) in Meridian.

I’ve heard rumors that the Abyssal have been slithering around Runic Descent.  I don’t like the thought of them desecrating the home of my forefathers.

With numerous reports of attacks on our people, the Runeguard are stretched thin.  We could certainly use your aid in this matter.

  • Travel to Runic Descent within Moonshade Highlands and use the Crystal Remembrancer to uncover why the Abyssal are slaughtering dwarves

Since this is in a dungeon, you’ll need to grab four others to knock this one out.  It’s only in the regular version of Runic Descent, so don’t enter the Expert version and expect to finish it.  Correction:  You should be able to do it in either version of Runic Descent, but it goes really quickly in the regular version when you’re 50.  :p

Once you defeat the Warden, walk to the area behind him and click on the glowy crystal at approximately (1248, 895).  It will call forth an image of General Stanig who will then give you the next quest: The Heir of Hammerknell.

That Remembrancer looks like it’s lodged in a painful place…

The Crystal Remembrancer hums to life, projecting an image of General Stanig from when he was alive.

Rewards:  40 Rune King’s Seals, XP

The Heir of Hammerknell (Unique) – Defiant/Guardian

This quest is obtained from the Image of General Stanig inside Runic Descent at the end of the “A Storm Brewing” quest.

I, General Stanig, sealed Hammerknell’s doors when the shade infected our home.  If you are seeing this message, I have failed to protect the outside world from the horrors within.  Now, there is only one hope.  Locate the Heir of Hammerknell, as they are the only one capable of wielding the rune magic of our ancestors.

There are those who would twist this power, so to protect the chosen one, I left clues to their identity scattered throughout Telara.  Find these Rune Tablets and protect the Heir so they can reopen the doors of Hammerknell and defeat the evil which I could not.

I pray that whoever receives this message has the mettle to undertake this task, for the fate of the world now rests on their shoulders.

  • Discover the Rune Tablets hidden throughout Telara to uncover the identity of General Stanig’s descendant

General Stanig hid six Rune Tablets in different places around Telara.  Each Tablet has a clue to lead you to it that is part of an artifact set.

Gloomy Rune Tablet

To the west of Moonshade lays a wood of gloam.  There, under the waters churned by a great wheel, the tablet rests within a slithering cave.  If you are to survive this journey, ensure your first step begins with a deep breath.

The entrance to said slithering cave is at approximately (4314, 2761) under the water in the middle of the lake.  Make sure to swim all the way to the very end of the cave, killing the guardians, until you find the chest shown below.

The Rune Tablet is in the chest.  Hover your cursor around until you get the option to interact.  It’s easiest if you’re floating right above it.  Doing this gives you the clue for the frozen Rune Tablet.

Images of General Stanig, handing a servant an anguished young dwarven boy, flood your mind.

Frozen Rune Tablet

To the north of Gloamwood the winds howl over frozen peaks.  Within this icy landscape, a great chimney churns with the fire of labor.  The tablet is within its walls, among the watcher’s tomes.

For this Tablet, simply take a Porticulum to the Chancel of Labors and head downstairs into the underground portion of the Library.  You’ll find the Tablet above the table shown below at approximately (4581, 1557).

This gives you the clue to the Mathosian Rune Tablet.

Images of a teenage dwarven boy, being tormented by pranksters while attending Quicksilver College, flood your mind.

Mathosian Rune Tablet

To the west of Iron Pine Peaks lies the home of the Mathosians.  Nestled in its southern mountains, rests a powerful keep, whose walls warded against crisis.  Now, the tablet continues to watch over the moor from its perch within the tower.

This tablet is found in Caer Kholum in southern Stillmoor.  You’ll find it at the top of the second entrance tower at approximately (1884, 3421).  It can be found inside the broken chest shown below.

This gives you the clue to the scarred Rune Tablet.

Images of a young dwarven man, fleeing from spiders in a dark wood, flood your mind.

Scarred Rune Tablet

To the south of Stillmoor, is a forest of iron.  A great dwarven hall rests within this scarred wood, providing safe haven for travelers.  The tablet rests there, where lords gather, and waits to be claimed again.

You’ll find this Tablet inside the Lord’s Hall in Scarwood Reach.  Head inside to approximately (2783, 4317) and you’ll find another broken chest with a Tablet inside.

This gives you the clue to the harrow Rune Tablet.

Images of a dwarven man, learning to fight planar creatures within Scarlet Gorge, flood your mind.

Harrow Rune Tablet

To the southeast of Scarwood Reach, lie fields of rock.  There, the people gather to worship at a church of stone.  Beneath this holy place, ancestors rest in peace, with the tablet watching vigilantly.

This clue sends you to Stonefield.  Specifically to The Harrow.  You can find the entrance at approximately (5086, 4758).  Once inside, head down all the way to the bottom and look for the sarcophagus shown below at approximately (5154, 4806).

This gives you the clue to the drought Rune Tablet.

The image of a dwarven man, surprised at being accepted into the order of the Runeguard, floods your mind.

Drought Rune Tablet

Far to the southeast of Stonefield, there is a land in everlasting drought.  The queen of this parched landscape rules from underneath the warrens and holds the final tablet captive within her royal nursery.

The final Tablet is found in the Droughtlands in the Mordant Warren.  Head south from the Porticulum and go in the entrance at approximately (8285, 7214).  Head all the way down to the bottom and into the main chamber.  You’ll see Queen Maelign on her perch in front of the Ancient Wardstone.  Kill her and you’ll find the Tablet in the broken chest behind her at approximately (8264, 7235).

This completes your task and gives you the final clue as to who the Heir is.

The image of a Runeguard dwarven hero, standing before the doors of Hammerknell as they pry themselves open, floods your mind.

Now you can finally talk to the Heir, Scotty Malm.  He can be found in Meridian at approximately (6204, 5198) and in Sanctum at approximately (7408, 3121).

What do you mean I’m the chosen one!?  I only just joined the Runeguard, and now I’m expected to tap into the lost art of rune magic to open Hammerknell, allowing all manner of horrors to burst free?

I need to sit down…

Rewards:  25 Rune King’s Seals, XP

Heir of Hammerknell Artifact Collection – Defiant/Guardian

The Heir of Hammerknell quest also rewards you with artifacts for an event-specific quest, which is a new feature of this World Event.  There are six artifacts matching the Tablets you have to track down.  Once you complete the quest, and thus complete your artifact set, you can turn it in to the Artifact Collector in your capital city for a reward.

Rewards:  40 Rune King’s Seals, 1 Lucky Coin, Coin

Touched by the Rain (Daily) – Defiant

This quest is new for Phase 2 and is obtained from Tekro Barkuul along with one other new one.

Will this blasted rain ever stop?  All over Telara, the constant downpour has begun to have an effect on the land.

I need someone to collect rainwater samples so that they may be tested for planar contamination.  Would you be willing to help me with that?

  • Investigate the properties of the rain falling in Telara.  Collect samples of rain from buckets around <level-dependant zone> and test them for contamination.

Head to the zone it lists and check your map.  The buckets show up and there are a lot of them, so it shouldn’t be too hard to round some up.

Once you have all three, head back to Tekro and see about your reward.

You drank the samples?  You are indeed brave, <your name here>!  I was expecting to force them down the throat of our esteemed guest.

And the results are not too promising.  It would seem that this unnatural rainfall is the result of something far more sinister than a simple weather pattern.

Note:  He talks about you drinking the samples, but don’t.  It just uses one up and you have to go get another one.  Someone messed that one up…

Rewards:  25 Rune King’s Seals, XP

Storm Summoner (Unique) – Defiant

This is the second new quest offered from Tekro Barkuul during Phase 2.

My teacher, Rurik, says that Jornaru himself is present at the gates of Hammerknell.  The powerful Jornaru is so absorbed in his rain-making ritual that you can walk right up to him!

That’s what Rurik implied, anyway.  He’s having me manage the lorekeeping here in town while he studies Jornaru at close range.

You should join him and watch.  Such an amazing outpouring of water magic may not be seen again in Telara!

  • Visit Jornaru’s rain ritual at the gates of Hammerknell Fortress in Moonshade Highlands

Head to Moonshade Highlands and go up the stairs to approximately (6459, 1361) to trigger the quest completion, then head over to Rurik to complete the quest.  He’s off to the side at approximately (6410, 1336).

Tekro Barkuul sent you?  That was wise of him.  This is a spectacle every Ascended should understand.

Jornaru seeks to fathom the secrets of Hammerknell.  By using his summoning ritual to bring the Plane of Water closer to Telara, he accomplishes two goals.  He both threatens Telarans with his ruinous storms, and brings more of his own power into this world.

Unfortunately, we cannot stop him while he is in this state.  All we can do now is watch, study, and learn.

Rewards:  25 Rune King’s Seals, XP

Stopping the Flood (Daily) – Defiant

This is one of two new quests offered by Arnalt Prell during Phase 2.

Like a breaking dam, our veil is cracking and the Plane of Water is surging into Telara.  I’m not sure what is causing this increase of attacks, but they must be stopped.

  • Close Water rifts throughout Telara that would grant experience

Pretty self-explanatory.  Just run around and close some rifts then head back to Arnalt for your reward.

You’ve done well, <your name here>.

I’m afraid, though, with every hole we plug, more cracks will form until the entire Plane of Water comes crashing through.

Rewards:  25 Rune King’s Seals

If It Slithers, Kill It (Daily) – Defiant

This is the second of the new quests offered by Arnalt Prell during Phase 2.  (This quest seems to have been disabled and is unable to acquire anymore.)

Creatures from the Plane of Water are surging into our realm, <your name here>.

Their numbers are swelling!  The people of Telara are counting on you to stand against these overwhelming odds.

  • Kill creatures from the Plane of Water that would grant experience

Rewards:  25 Rune King’s Seals

A Dire Threat (Group 5 Daily) – Defiant

We have a problem, <your name here>.  The Abyssal have been seen lurking on the coastline with a strange shell-like artifact.

The rest of us have our attention on Jornaru, so it will be up to you and your fellow Ascended to deal with the artifact.

Take a small team out to investigate the artifact, and put an end to any threat it poses.

  • Destroy the Abyssal Artifact and confront any creatures that may be guarding it

Once you pick up the quest, check your map for the quest marker so you know which zone it’s in.  Round up a group, yes it takes a group, and head to the Artifact and interact with it.

Abyssal Artifact

Once you do so, a big baddie named Tzzik’Clik shows up and attempts to snap you into pieces with his giant claws.  (Golora appears for lower-level players.)  Once your brave band of adventurers defeats him, head back to Dulan to receive your reward.

Thank you, <your class here>.  I won’t forget the service you’ve done for me.

The Abyssal will no doubt try to summon more creatures while we are focusing our efforts elsewhere.  We are depending upon you to stay ever vigilant.

Rewards:  40 Rune King’s Seals, XP

Hidden Valuables (Repeatable) – Defiant/Guardian

This quest comes from the “Worn Treasure Map” loot.

The paper is encrusted in brine and is badly faded but you can make out just enough of the ink to determine it is a map.

More importantly there is a marked spot still visible!

  • Find the Hidden Cache and open it for your reward

Once you accept the quest, you’ll get a quest marker on your map.  Find it and head to the circle it shows to search for your hidden treasure.

Watch out for the guardian!

Once you find it, defeat its guardian and open it for your reward.

The lock on the chest is badly rusted but with a quick kick the chest is unlocked and ready to reveal its secrets!

Rewards:  Salt Encrusted Bag, XP

When I opened my first one, it gave me a Broken Weapon Fragment which was yet another quest starter!  The next one gave me Rune King’s Seals.

Lost Treasures (Repeatable) – Defiant/Guardian

This quest comes from the “Worn Treasure Map” loot.

The shredded parchment makes reading difficult but it appears to be a map.

A small X can be found near a few recognizable landmarks.

Torn Scrap (Repeatable) – Defiant/Guardian

This quest is obtained via the Torn Scrap loot item.

This scrap of parchment is confusing.

Along with some incomprehensible symbols, it has comical drawings of planar creatures scrawled in the margins.

Petrov Whiteman could help decipher the script.  He studies planar linquistics in Meridian/Sanctum.

  • Talk to Petrov Whiteman in Meridian/Sanctum

Abyssal motivations cannot be fathomed – Petrov Whitemane

Petrov Whitemane can be found wandering around in Meridian at approximately (6198, 5205) and in Sanctum at approximately (7407, 3104).  Talk to him to progress to the next step.

This scrap of parchment is not from Telara.  A planar being must have brought it through to the world.

What inane images and text!  They look to be telling some kind of joke.

<your name here>, let’s test it.  Laugh at Deeps while showing him the parchment, and see if he responds.

  • Laugh at Deeps while holding the Torn Scrap

You can find Deeps in a cage near Petrov.  Target him and /laugh.  Return to Petrov when you’re done.

Ha ha!  It goes to show that some humor applies to all planes!

Rewards:  25 Rune King’s Seals, XP

Redeemed Rewards (Repeatable) – Defiant/Guardian

This quest comes from the Broken Weapon Fragment.

While this weapon doesn’t appear to be of much use in a fight it does have several jewels adorning it.  There has been talk of a treasure hunter, a Felicia Tassletip/Veronica Wanderlight, who recently moved into Meridian/Sanctum.  She may have interest in trading for this item.

  • Travel to Meridian/Sanctum and speak to Felicia Tassletip/Veronica Wanderlight about the Broken Weapon Fragment

Felicia can be found in the Manufactory in Meridian at approximately (6018, 5253).  Veroncia can be found in The Lodge of the Planes at approximately (7597, 3097).  Talk to her to complete your quest.

Oh what is this you have there?  The gems on this weapon are lovely!  Emerald and sapphire it looks like.  I’ll be happy to take it off your hands in trade for one of the weapons I’ve found in my travels.

Rewards:  Choice of one of two weapons, XP

This was the Level 50 version of the quest, so other versions will have lower stats obviously.  Not amazing if you’re already into the end-game content, but good if you just hit 50 or are about to.  Keep in mind, other classes will have other types of weapons but the stats should be similar.

Storm Chaser (Repeatable) – Defiant/Guardian

This quest comes from the Jornaru’s Seal loot item.

This tablet describes a ritual that the Abyssal leader, Jornaru, is attempting within Runic Descent.  If the ritual is completed, Jornaru will command a storm that will devastate Telara.

  • Use the Thunder Stone at the marked location within Runic Descent to call out Jornaru

The Thunder Stone can be found inside both the regular and Expert versions of Runic Descent, though it’s considerably easier to do the regular version at 50.  ;)

Once you’ve defeated the Warden, the Thunder Stone can be found on his platform at roughly (1241, 926).  Interact with it to summon Jornaru, who will then attack you.  Subdue him then return to Petrov Whitemane to complete the quest and earn your rewards.

So the coward, Jornaru, was trying to harness a tempest to wipe out Telara?  It does not surprise me, but as long as you oppose him we have hope.

Rewards:  40 Rune King’s Seal, XP, Coin

Into the Depths (Area Quest) – Defiant/Guardian

This Area Quest will randomly spawn in seaside areas.  Three Idols of the Deep will show up on your map in a triangular formation.  When you start attacking them, they start calling in reinforcements so be careful.  Once you take each of them out, the boss spawns.

Deep Terror

This bad boy spawned with 1.6 million health.  While he doesn’t hit too hard, a mage tanked ours, he takes a long time to kill.  I’m not sure what kind of items he drops as he only gave us 25 Rune King’s Seals, but I’d expect you have a decent chance at some of the rare drop loot off this guy due to the work involved taking him out.  Since it’s an Area Quest, you also get 25 Rune King’s Seals for completing it as well which helps to take some of the sting out of not getting any rare drop loot.  Some, not all.  ;)

Building Cannons (Unique) – Defiant/Guardian

This quest is new for Phase 3 and is obtained from Tekro Barkuul.

The Runeguard have brought their most powerful cannons out of storage.  Once the weapons are running again, they’re going to use them to blast open the gates of Hammerknell!

My teacher, Rurik, is overseeing the repairs.  I have to stay in town, but you might like to see how he’s doing.

Rurik and his team are setting up the cannons right in front of the Fortress.

  • Visit the Runeguard restoring cannons at the gates of Hammerknell Fortress in Moonshade Highlands

Head to Moonshade Highlands and up the steps toward Hammerknell to roughly (6458, 1356) to trigger the cut-scene-type-thing.  Once it’s done, head over and talk to Rurik in the tent like last time.

After Jornaru’s attempts at breaching the gate, we’ve learned that we need to finish his work ourselves.

Once the gates are open, we can prevent Jornaru from learning the secrets of Hammerknell, and defeat the forces of Death that linger inside the city.

While you’re here, you should go up to the Fortress entrance.  We’ve been hearing pounding and roaring from the creatures inside!

Rewards:  25 Rune King’s Seals, XP

War for Hammerknell (Daily) – Defiant/Guardian

This quest is new for Phase 3 and is obtained from Arnalt Prell.

The Planes of Death and Water wage war for ownership of Hammerknell here on Telara.  No matter who wins this conflict, our people lose.

  • Kill creatures from Water and Death rifts that would grant experience

Fairly simple to do.  Although, there were a few times I killed creatures that should have counted but they didn’t at all.  So…keep trying if that happens.  It only takes a good rift or two and you’re done.

You’ve prevented the Planes of Death and Water from capturing Hammerknell today, but this war is far from over.

Rewards:  25 Rune King’s Seals, XP

Sea of Death (Daily) – Defiant/Guardian

This quest is new for Phase 3 and is obtained from Arnalt Prell.

The Planes of Death and Water overflow into our realm.  If the Ascended cannot stop this flood, then Telara will drown in a sea of death.

  • Close Water and Death rifts throughout Telara that would grant experience

This one’s pretty simple:  hunt down Water or Death rifts close to your level and close them.  Once done, return to Arnalt Prell for your rewards.

Thank you, <your name here>.

Unfortunately, this victory will be short lived.  The Planes of Death and Water will not rest until Telara is destroyed.

Rewards:  25 Rune King’s Seals, XP

Blame the Plane (Daily) – Defiant/Guardian

This quest is new for Phase 3 and is obtained from Arnalt Prell.

We need to buy more time for Scotty to find a solution to the Hammerknell problem.

Here’s what to do.  Take a Water Aura Charm from a Water invasion.  Then, use it on a Death invader.  It will make you look like a Water invader.

This will fool the forces of Death into thinking that the forces of Water are a bigger threat than the Runeguard.

  • Collect a Water Aura Charm from a Water invasion, then use it on a Death rift creature

Any type of Water boss should give the charm.  I got mine from the Deep Terror in Shimmersand.

Once you have it, track down a creature from the Plane of Death, target them, then use the icon from your quest tracker.

Talk about something fishy…

Once done, you can return to Arnalt for your rewards.

That’s great!  The forces of Water and Death are even more incensed with one another than usual.  That means they’re less focused on Hammerknell.

We may yet get the gates open before they extract the secrets of the Fortress.

Rewards:  25 Rune King’s Seals, XP

Fallen Rain (Daily) – Defiant/Guardian

This quest is a copy of the quest from Phase 2 and is obtained from Tekro Barkuul along with one other new one.

Cannonfire (Unique) – Defiant/Guardian

This is a new quest offered up by Tekro Barkuul during Phase 4.

<Your name here>, the Runeguard have the cannons working!  They’re firing them at Hammerknell as we speak.

I had a chance to watch them not long ago.  For a student of lore such as myself, it’s amazing to see such ancient runic weapons in action.

You should go visit them.  If you’re lucky, you might be there when the gates give way.

Oh, and be sure to speak with Rurik.  He’s been so busy with the cannons, he could use a break.

  • Visit the Runeguard firing cannons at the gates of Hammerknell Fortress in Moonshade Highlands

Once again, this is simply a story-line quest taking you to the Gates of Hammerknell to see/hear a new bit of the story.  Head to Moonshade Highlands and up the steps to trigger the story and the quest completion.  Talk to Rurik off to the left to get your reward.

Keeping the cannons firing at all hours is daunting, but we must smash through as soon as we can.

Thank the runes that Scotty was able to make ammunition that will wear through those doors.

Still, it’ll be some while before the gates collapse.  And when they do, we’d better be prepared for whatever might leap out.

Rewards:  25 Rune King’s Seals, XP

Gathering Shadows (Daily) – Defiant/Guardian

This is a new quest for Phase 4 and is offered by Scotty Malm himself.

By cracking the door of Hammerknell, Jornaru has allowed Shadespawn to escape from the Fortress.

We can use their energy to weaken the door further.

The Shadespawn are infesting <level-appropriate zones>.  Use this shade trap to capture them.

  • Use the shade trap on Shadespawn Infestations in <level-appropriate zones> to collect Shadespawn

Head to the zone(s) listed and check your map for the area marker to find your Shadespawn.  Once there, look for the following:

As you can see, they’re not hard to find.  Initially they are immune to damage.  Simply target them, click the icon on your quest tracker, and move on to the next one.  Once you have all you need, return to Scotty to complete the quest.

Because these Shadespawn have passed through the gates of Hammerknell, they bear the runic imprint of the original gate seal.

When inverted, these imprints can be turned against what remains of the seal.  All I need to do now is apply them to our cannon projectiles, and they’ll cut through the doors all the faster.

Rewards:  25 Rune King’s Seals, XP

Grave Consequences (Daily Group) – Defiant/Guardian

This is a new group quest offered up during Phase 4 from Dulan Lighthammer.

We have another problem, <your name here>.  The Endless Court has seen the Abyssal forces grow with powerful creatures, and they are responding in kind.

You have been helping to encourage their infighting, but we can not allow either side to get much stronger.

I need you to take a small team out to destroy the focus they are using to summon their reinforcements.  Kill whatever creatures they may have already brought into Telara.

  • Destroy the Endless Court Artifact and confront any creatures that may be guarding it

Just like with the previous group quest, you’ll want to gather up some friends before attempting to complete this one.  Check your map for the location and then head on out.

Once you’ve found the Artifact, interact with it to spawn the new bad guy and take him out.  For Level 50s, his name is Aizen Darkclaw and he’s somewhat of a pushover.  He deals minor direct damage, does an AOE-magnet to pull your group to him, then does an AOE-ground-pound to hurt everyone.  Finish him off and then head back to Dulan for your reward.  Lower Level players will get the Necrotic Reaver, who should have a somewhat similar fight mechanic.

Thank you, <your class here>.  I won’t forget the many services you’ve done for me.

The Endless, like the Abyssal, will no doubt try to summon more of their monstrosities.  We are depending upon you to remain vigilant.

Reward:  40 Rune King’s Seals, XP

Can I ask what the Abyssal Banner does other than plant a banner that you’ll ride past in 2 seconds?

It’s worth mentioning that Golora (25 elite) spawns when you investigate the Abyssal Artifact. He’ll tear you a new one if you’re solo.

I presume you get a different level Golora based on your level.

    • July 2, 2011 6:21 pm

To be fair, I did list it as a group (5) quest which means you want to have a group of 5 people to do it. Sometimes it can be done with less, but solo…rarely gonna happen. And yeah, it’s going to adjust its level based on yours.

Where Is the Storyteller in Sanctum for the “Witness the madness”? Im to low lvl for Hammerknell!

    • July 4, 2011 1:27 pm

Good question. I didn’t think to look before, but I just scoured Sanctum and couldn’t find one at all. It may be an NPC/Item that shows up during a later Phase so I’ll keep my eyes peeled.

Hey I found a Necrotic Banner in one of the Death Rifts. Is that something new?

    • July 8, 2011 12:06 am

I don’t know that I’ve heard of one, so yeah, it could be like the Abyssal Banner. I haven’t seen one yet, so not sure.

The Necrotic Banner is new and drops from Death Rifts, it works just like the Abyssal, 3 min duration, 3 min CD, but the main pole part is an elongated spine (complete with spinal cord!) and stretched skin for a banner, I dont know how you get your screenshots, but ill post one of the banner, and one of the tooltip in case you want to use them.

Thanks for the info! I haven’t gone Death Rift hunting yet, so haven’t looted one. Been working on the different quest details.

where do you get that mount

    • July 14, 2011 8:00 am

The mount is a random, extremely rare drop from rifts/invasions and will also be a rare drop inside the Hammerknell raid instance once it opens.

i dont think you can get witness to madness anymore, i keep clicking on storyteller but he doesent do anything but say that hes seen things

    • July 19, 2011 3:43 am

Well, currently in Phase 4, there is no cinematic-type talking sequence. That may be why it’s not triggering. You’ll have to probably wait and try again in Phase 5 and hope there is one there.

You should be able to do the last Phase of it…unless I missed the end while I’ve been busy IRL :/
